Lewis McKnight

Lewis McKnight, age 82 of London, KY, husband of Mildred McKnight, stepped into glory on Monday, April 11 at St. Joseph Hospital in London. Along with his wife of 59 years, he leaves behind two children, Beverly McKnight Pietch and husband Rick of Charlotte, NC, Lewis Randall “Randy” McKnight and wife Tia of Indian Trail, NC; three siblings, Norma Jean Plumley of Mooresville, NC, James Donald McKnight and wife Donna of Altoona, PA, Jerry Wayne McKnight and wife Diane of LaFollette, TN; one grandson, Benjamin Adam McKnight of King’s Mountain, NC, plus a host of other family and friends to mourn his passing. He was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar & Retta McKnight and three brothers, Luther, Raleigh and Robert Ernest McKnight. Lewis was a member of the US Navy from 1951 to 1961. He was a Korean War veteran, serving on US naval destroyers as a torpedoman, and ultimately rising to the rank of Chief Petty Officer. After serving in the Navy, Lewis joined the CSX railway, retiring after working there for 30 years. Recently, while living at Village Heights in London, Lewis enjoyed watching televised games of his beloved UK Wildcats, teasing the staff, and occasionally escaping the facility for an adventure with one of his cohorts. In his younger days, Lewis loved boating and camping on Lake Cumberland with his extended family, even learning to slalom water ski at age 50. After retirement, golf was a favorite hobby--especially competing for the McKnight Brothers Golf Trophy. The church was important throughout his life, and Lewis was a devoted member of Mt. Zion Church of Christ for nearly 40 years. When asked to pick a favorite Bible verse, Lewis chose 1 John 4:8: He that loveth not, knoweth not God, for God is love. A simple verse for a simple, decent man. The family would like to recognize the staff of Laurel Heights for the wonderful service they provide to all residents and families. Funeral services for Lewis McKnight will be conducted on Saturday, April 16 at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of House-Rawlings Funeral Home with Jerry Brown officiating. Burial will follow in the Wilson Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends beginning at 12:00 p.m. until the funeral hour, also on Saturday at the funeral home.
