George Anthony Sungy Jr.

George Anthony Sungy, Jr. was born December 12, 1943 to the late George Sungy and Lucille (Hilt) Sungy in Barberton, OH. George was of Hungarian decent with his father’s mother being an immigrant to the USA. George is survived by his loving wife Lillie Mae Benge-Sungy. His brothers Dale and wife Marybeth Sungy, of Brandon MS and Gene and wife Susan of Arvada, CO. He is survived by his children, Gerald S. Savage II, Danielle D. Savage and Scott Sungy. He is survived by his grandchildren, Keila A. Savage, Dominic Savage, Gerald S. Savage III, Keegan Savage, Jackson Savage, Za’Liana Woodhouse, Za’Mauri Woodhouse and Skya Rainbow Woodhouse. He is also survived by a host of family and friends who loved him. George decided after high school that he wanted more than to do factory work and enlisted into the U. S. Air Force. George was enlisted in the U. S. Air Force from July 19, 1961 and retired August 30, 1987 as Senior Master Sargent. His occupation while in the Air Force was Administrative and Intelligence. He was a Vietnam Veteran and highly decorated soldier. He received the following awards: (A leaf cluster meant that he received an additional award for that medal). Meritorious Service Medal with one oak leaf cluster; Air Force Commendation Medal with three oak leaf clusters, Air Force Outstanding unit award with valor device and three oak leaf clusters; Air Force Organizational Excellence award; Air Force Good Conduct Medal with one silver and one bronze oak leaf cluster; National Defense Service; Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal; Vietnam Service Medal with three service stars; Air Force Overseas Long Tour Ribbon with three oak leaf clusters; Air Force Longevity Service Award Ribbon with one silver oak leaf cluster; NCO Professional Military Education Grad Ribbon with one oak leaf cluster; Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon; Air Force Training Ribbon and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. Following his retirement with the U. S. Air Force, George began a career with the U. S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) as Intelligence Analyst and retired after 15 years of service. His first assignment with DEA was to Texas. He loved Texas and said he was just born in the wrong state. Following his assignment there, he was assigned to Hong Kong and spent many years in the far east and his last assignment with the DEA was to London, KY with Appalachia High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (AHIDTA). It was that last assignment that he met his wife Lillie, who was an intern with Eastern Kentucky University, College of Justice and Safety. They were married December 15, 2007. George loved his job and said he couldn’t believe that he was paid to do that work. He always said that no one had to tell him that he was doing a good job. There were drugs, money and people in handcuffs. George had some stories to tell of his adventures with DEA. George purchased a 62-acre farm for he and Lillie. He loved it and called it paradise. It was a lot of work but he loved it. He loved to hunt and fish. He made a food plot and also had a pond on it. There were no neighbors that could be seen. He loved being able to see the deer, turkeys and the wildlife. He spent many hours on the front porch with Lillie and just sat and admired God’s beauty. George loved to share his knowledge of shooting, hunting and fishing with his grandchildren and was also a shotgun instructor with 4-H. George was a Kentucky Colonel. George loved fishing and was in Woods Creek fishing tournaments on Thursday nights with his partner, friend and brother-in-law, Sherman Mills. George was a member of the Disabled American Veterans, Chapter 158, which he served as Adjutant for several years and was on the Honor Guard. He was also a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars. George always stood for doing things the right way and not half - doing anything. He has been a role model for his children and grandchildren. George was a generous man, there were many times he helped people who were in financial need and no one ever knew, except Lillie. He will be missed by so many family and friends. George made a difference in people’s lives. There was a sermon by Pastor Trevor about the dash in the middle of a tombstone of birth and death date. That dash represented a person’s life and what they did with that life. George never forgot that message. While none of us are perfect, George tried to make a difference with his dash! Military honors will be conducted by his chapter, Disabled American Veterans, Chapter 158, Keavy, KY. There will be monies to cover his burial expenses. However, there will be a drastic drop in income for his family. Should anyone want to give a contribution in lieu of flowers and such, it would be greatly appreciated. However, please know that it is not required and your love and kindness is what are needed the most. Visitation will be held at House-Rawlings Funeral Home on Friday, October 20, 2023 beginning at 6:00 p.m. and the Funeral Service will be on held at the Creek Church, Hwy 80, London, KY with Pastors Trevor Barton and Curtis Neal officiating on Saturday, October 21, 2023 beginning at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow at the McKinney Cemetery in Rockcastle, Kentucky. Pallbearers will be: Gerald S. Savage II, Gerald S. Savage III, Dominic Savage, Sherman Mills, Chris Kirby and Robert Gilbert. Honorary Pallbearer: Curtis Neal The family has entrusted House-Rawlings Funeral Home with the arrangements.
