Sophie Mae Bundy Crumpler

Sophie Mae Bundy Crumpler, age 74, went to live with the Lord on January 1, 2026 at her home in London, Kentucky. Sophie was born in London on August 31, 1951 to the late Georgia Brown Bundy and Orus Bundy. Visitation for Sophie Mae Bundy will be held on Sunday, January 4, 2026 at 10:00 a.m. at Laurel River Missionary Baptist Church on Rough Creek Rd. in London, Kentucky. A funeral celebration will immediately follow at 11:00 a.m. with Reverend Darren Cupp preaching. Burial will follow at the Willie P. Brown Cemetery on House Branch in Clay County, Kentucky. The family thanks everyone who has loved and prayed for Sophie, as well as the nurses and staff of VNA Hospice and her sitters and caregivers. Sophie was predeceased by her brother, Carl Bundy. She is survived by her brothers, Charles, Larry and Orus Wayne Bundy, and by her husband Steve Crumpler. Sophie was a retired teacher in the Laurel County School System. She graduated from Bush High School and Cumberland College. Her first job was teaching in the old Bush School, working with the same teachers who had taught her and whom she loved and greatly respected. After her marriage in 1984, she served with her husband in churches in Pennsylvania and Kentucky. Along the way, Sophie was also a teacher at Oneida Baptist Institute for 11 years. She returned to London in 2005 and finished her teaching career at North Laurel High School. Sophie grew up in the Laurel River Missionary Baptist Church where she worshipped and served, and where she professed her faith in Jesus Christ as her Savior and Lord, and was baptized. As she grew to maturity, she served as a Sunday School teacher, Training Union teacher and WMU director. She met her husband while serving as a summer missions volunteer in Pennsylvania. Sophie loved the Lord. She loved church. She loved teaching. It was not just her job; it was her calling, Sophie was a good and faithful wife, and a Godly woman. Sophie has been bedfast, and not able to leave her house for the last several years. Her often-repeated question, several times every day was, “Are we going to church today?” Today, the answer is “Yes! Church today, every day, for eternity.” Worshipping the Lord and his redeemed from all ages and from all places, rejoicing in His goodness, righteousness and love. It will be just like Heaven to Sophie. The family has entrusted House-Rawlings Funeral Home with the arrangements.
