Peggy Amburgey Pratt

Peggy Amburgey Pratt, age 86, of London, Kentucky passed away on Saturday, October 11, 2025. She was born November 14, 1938 in McRoberts, Kentucky to the late Woodrow and Arminta (nee Combs) Amburgey. A graduate of Hindman Settlement School in Knott County, Kentucky, Peggy attended Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky eventually obtaining her bachelor’s degree from the University of Kentucky in Lexington, Kentucky. Later in life she went on to earn master’s degrees from Union Commonwealth University in Barbourville and Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond, Kentucky. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Dr. William (Bill) Devaughn Pratt; eight siblings, Covie Amburgey, Geraldine Hopkins, Andrea Darnley, Wanda Amburgey, Matilda Amburgey, Ruby Amburgey, Ruth Epperson, and Carl Amburgey; as well as her beloved dog, Tilly. Born the youngest of nine children, Peggy learned early the values of hard work, compassion and perseverance. She understood the value of family in good and bad times, especially losing her father at a young age as well as multiple siblings. She looked to her older sister, Ruth, almost as a second mother. Peggy was a retired educator in the Laurel County Kentucky school system with 28 years of devoted service. She is often remembered by students as a patient, caring, and beloved educator. Peggy moved to London in 1973, where she become a vibrant part of the community. Alongside her teaching career, she also owned and operated a children’s clothing store called Peg Board, reflecting her hard work and drive. She was deeply committed to London and Eastern Kentucky serving on various boards and committees to better our community, including serving on the boards of the Hindman Settlement School and St. Joseph Hospital of London. Peggy was also a former elder of the First Presbyterian Church of London. Her dedication to her community was honored when she became a Kentucky Colonel. She leaves behind three children, Michael D. Pratt of London, Mark D. Pratt (Heather Ponder) of London, Elizabeth Pratt Bernardi (Brian) of Louisville; four grandchildren, Daisy Browning (Hayden), William Brooks Pratt, Emma Pratt, and Laurel Wallace; two step-grandchildren, Robert Bernardi and Natalie Bernardi; and honorary grandchild, Nicolas Ponder; and a host of other family and friends including nieces Diane Shelton, Benji Collins and Nancy Angelos. Peggy’s greatest joy came from her family. Her life was marked by grace, generosity and service – to her students, family, friends and community. She will be remembered with love and gratitude by all who knew her. A funeral service honoring Peggy Amburgey Pratt will be held on Wednesday, October 15, 2025 at 1:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in London, Kentucky with the Rev. Rich Fifield officiating. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, October 14, 2025 at 6:00 p.m. in the chapel of House-Rawlings Funeral Home. The family has trusted House-Rawlings Funeral Home with Arrangements. Donations can be made in her honor to the Hindman Settlement School or the First Presbyterian Church of London Food Bank.
